Gods Will Fall Coming January 29th

Recently I was lucky enough to get to take part in a Press Event for Manchester-based Clever Beans’ latest game: Gods Will Fall. Releasing on January 29th, Gods Will Fall follows a team of Viking warriors who, after losing most of their army, set out to take down the diabolical Gods.

It’s a procedurally generated - but also not procedurally generated - title, with each dungeon being hand-designed to have their own unique appearances and feel. The part that is procedurally generated is the difficulty of each dungeon (which can vary each time you play, so you never know what to expect) and which order the dungeons come in. All dungeons are available from the beginning, so it’s up to you to decide which route you’re gonna take. Take on a dungeon that’s too difficult and you could see your team of eight Vikings quickly dwindle down to one.

As you begin the game you’ll have your eight Vikings, each with their own personalities. One will go on to take on the dungeon, and if successful - defeat the God. If they’re not successful, their body will lay in the dungeon and instead of the doors opening to thunderous applause from your other Vikings, they will be left confused and panicked over the absence of their fellow warrior.

Some Vikings will react differently to these events, such as wishing to go in to retrieve their friend - you can opt to continue on and try the dungeon again with another warrior, but beware - the more members you trap in the dungeon, the less you’ll have left to carry on the fight. Thankfully, you can choose to take on another dungeon (which may be easier) and come back later, and upon successfully taking down a God - any trapped Vikings in that dungeon will be released back to you.

It looks like a lot of fun, and it’s definitely a game I cannot wait to get stuck into. With a stunning art style, and tonnes of lore to get excited about, as well as an intricate system built on stat changes amongst your warriors depending on the path laid out before them - getting a sneak peek into the game just made me want it more.

Seeing the bonds between your warriors, and how they might be affected by each others’ wins and losses feels organic and real, and is something I don’t think I’ve ever seen utilised in such a way before. It’s tactical, and challenging - but perfecting your play style during a run and taking advantage of all the loot you find, as well as preparing yourself for the worst in the event of starting on a harder dungeon, is all part of the fun.

Launching January 29th 2021, on Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC and Stadia - I really cannot wait for this.
