My thoughts on 2022…

As we approach the dawn of a new year, I look back at the last 12 months and the first thing that comes to mind is “where the fuck has the time gone?”

Hours turned to days, to weeks and then months in what seemed to be a matter of minutes. Plans I’d made and remade, reminders scribbled in notebooks (of which I’ve lost count), and tasks I’d committed to all quickly passed me by. In a flash, things I felt like I was working on currently would have been waylaid; a holdup at some point in the process would lead to a distraction, and before you know it, weeks have passed since I’d read this email or started that task.

My Gran always told me that my eyes are bigger than my belly. She of course meant it in terms of my appetite, though I can definitely see the comparison here. I always bite off more than I can chew, committing to several things I want to do - and often not knowing how to say no to the things I don’t.

I’m trying to get better at it. Working full time, whilst having a busy home life (kids, eh?) and running a website takes up a staggering amount of time. I take a day’s annual leave from my ‘actual job’, or even just the weekend off, and I try to dedicate some time to the website or editing for YouTube and filming content - and it feels like only a tiny little piece has been chipped away from the backlog.

2022 completely and utterly ran away from me. It’s a vicious circle, having gone through similar in ‘21 before getting things under control and thinking “good, now I can relax” and then things mount up again, and then I end up feeling defeated and struggle to get the motivation going again.

It’s such a stupid thing to complain about, as I love doing this and would love to do this full-time eventually. But in the interim, where I’m juggling a bunch of different boxes (some of which may or may not be on fire at any point), it is a little exhausting.

So, as I look forward to 2023 and the plans I’ve made a thousand times before, I’m making a promise to myself that things will improve. No more trying, more doing.

I will get a regular schedule of content on my YouTube channel.

I will get on top of my backlog and stay on top of it.

I will dedicate time every day to my projects.

And maybe I’ll succeed this time.
