Playdate Set to Release Soon
Our previous knowledge of the company Panic is limited to two titles they previously published: Firewatch, and Untitled Goose Game, both of which we absolutely loved.
Now they’re set to release a funky little handheld called Playdate, which looks amazing. It’s tiny, and fits nicely in the palm of your hand, with a few simple button controls and a hand-crank at the side that is a slightly-gimmicky addition, but one that gives it a unique selling point, as well as a buttload of charm.
With 24 games unlocking at a rate of 2 per week for the first season, it looks to be a really intriguing package. Some will utilise the cranking mechanic, and some don’t - but all games are in black and white, covering a variety of genres and ranging from short adventures to longer ones.
They’ve asked for no spoilers to be posted, allowing everyone to get the full joy of testing out each of these games when they get them - especially as the games are released in a weekly rota, kicking off at the point you receive yours, so you might be on games 1-2 whereas someone who got it earlier than you could have reached games 9-10.
It’s definitely something we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for, and hope to be able to get our hands on one. It’s a super interesting concept, and one that has definitely piqued our interest.
You can preorder a Playdate of your own, with prices starting at $179 - though any orders placed now likely will not ship until 2023, as it’s proving to be very popular.
There’s also a cute little sandwich style cover you can buy for $29, to protect your Playdate, as well as a Stereo Dock that is planned for release in the future, which acts as a charger as well as a Stereo Bluetooth speaker. I love how this Dock looks, and it will be an ideal addition to a shelf if you wish to display the Playdate whilst not in use, too.
Are you interested in Playdate? Have you preordered one?
